On 14th May 2013, Blackberry CEO Thorsten Heins shocked everyone with their news of launching of BBM messenger app to android and iOS. BBM is a messaging app from the Blackberry which is available only on the blackberry devices which was introduced in 2006. It is different from normal messages as it allows instant messaging between blackberry devices. No wonder that it’s because of BBM that has been able to keep blackberry in the market. You can easily download the BBM app from the blackberry site while it comes pre-installed in the blackberry news OS, Blackberry 10.
WHAT BBM HAS GOT WITH IT?
BBM was the first messaging app which does offer more than just text messages between devices. You can send up to 2000 characters at a time without the hassle of sending multiple texts for more characters; voice chat, video call (introduced in the latest version of the BBM), share your location, files and pictures with your loved ones. Users can also update status, put up your display pictures, have multiple chats with all your friends with group chats and can also see whether the text you send is seen by your friend (helping couples for many years).
Also BBM is very much secured and efficient than any other messaging app because of Blackberry servers, used for instant messaging. In BBM, all the communication takes place through Canadian company’s Research in Motion (RIM) servers and hence requires Blackberry data plan. Also to add a contact to your BBM, it is not necessary to have their number. It requires 8-digit alphanumeric PIN (BBM PIN) dedicated with every BBM device but we don’t know whether we also need PIN for android and apple devices or not.
EFFECT ON BLACKBERRY SALES:
With Blackberry decision of introducing BBM to other OS can be bitter as well as sweet for the company. No doubt sales of the blackberry devices have been primarily because of BBM otherwise it doesn’t seem to offer much to the users. Recently blackberry launched some new devices like Z10 and Q10 with their new OS 10. New OS was completely refined, modern design, fresh feel, Blackberry World with addition of bunch of apps but still way behind than android and iOS. Blackberry’s hopes were shattered with its new OS and didn’t receive high volume sales as they expected. Even Blackberry playbook shattered their sales and position in the tablet market as well.
HOW WILL IT AFFECT WHATSAPP AND iMESSAGING?
Blackberry also told that it is waiting for acceptance from Google and Apple for its launch as they are still not certain whether they should allow Blackberry or not. No doubt, BBM will give tough competition to imessaging, whatsapp and other messaging apps too. All these apps already share almost all market shares but BBM also is no way behind. So the stage is all set and battle will gonna be more intense.
RUMORS OUT THERE

Recently there were rumours that BBM will be coming to android and iOS on 27th July, 2013. But later Blackberry denied the announcement and the official date is yet to be confirmed from Blackberry. Also there was an app released on Google play store on 21 July 2013 which claimed to be a BBM app and received over 10,00,000 download in few hours only.
